What It Means to Care About Where You Live

Caring about where you live goes beyond simply being in a place. It’s about being connected to it, to the people, the experiences and the moments that shape how it feels over time.

In a city like Reno, that connection often shows up through community. Through the events people return to year after year, the restaurants where conversations happen and the spaces where relationships are built. These aren’t just things to do; they’re part of what defines the identity of a place.

Over time, I’ve come to see that caring about where you live is an active choice. It’s showing up, supporting local spaces, participating in events and contributing to the communities you’re part of. It’s recognizing that the culture of a place isn’t created on its own…it’s built by the people who invest in it.

It also means paying attention. Noticing what makes a place feel familiar, what brings people together and what creates a sense of belonging. When you start to see those patterns, you begin to understand how a city’s identity is shaped…through shared experiences and consistent involvement.

Caring about where you live doesn’t have to be grand or complicated. It can be as simple as choosing to show up, to engage and to be part of what’s happening around you. Over time, those small choices contribute to something much bigger…a sense of connection, pride and belonging.

At the end of the day, the work, the people and the experiences all come back to one thing…choosing to care about where you are and the role you play in it. That choice is what turns a place into something meaningful.

As you think about where you live, consider how you show up for it. What does it mean to you, and how do you contribute to the community around you?
